Who are we:
The Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary is the southwest's premiere zoological facility dedicated to instilling a sense of active stewardship for our planet's reptiles and amphibians. Over the last 22 years, PHS has become responsible for the largest collection of reptiles in the United States! We are a close-knit family of animal people whose collective goal of preservation, education, and appreciation is evident through our facility's multi-faceted nature and work. Educators play a pivotal role in disseminating our message of conservation and exciting people's curiosity in the fascinating world of herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians).
Our educators share their knowledge of the natural world and our sanctuary with our facility's guests and attendees to various special events (i.e., baseball games, birthday parties, expos, etc.). Educators are often the frontline of our brand and serve as the friendly personalities through whom people come to know our sanctuary.
Interns in this position will have the opportunity to shadow our educator staff and learn various skills and techniques integral to conservation education. Tasks will involve working both on sanctuary premises (i.e., tours, special events, etc.) and off-premises events. The ultimate goal of this internship will be to train competent educators who can lead tours on their own and handle basic-level education animals. Competitive candidates will demonstrate previous knowledge/experience in education, oration, biological themes, and will be courteous and helpful. We have a small team, so your tasks will have a substantial impact on our overall efforts.
Who are you:
Time Commitment: Interns in this role will be required to commit to 130 hours of work over the semester. (Approximately one eight-hour shift every week)
Qualifications: All interested candidates are encouraged to apply. This position is largely a learning role, and applicants that are selected will be taught through the course of the internship.
Competitive candidates might have the following skills:
- One year of experience working with education (informal or formal), demonstrated knowledge of animals, a degree in biology, animal husbandry, or related experience.
- Adaptive and comfortable with changing circumstances.
- Capable of lifting 25 pounds.
Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their resume and cover letter to our lead conservation educator at Isabel@phoenixherp.com
